This Week The Mice Have Mostly Been...

Hey Cool Cats, we have news...

Whoop!

But before you slink off for a cocktail-fuelled weekend of fun, we thought we'd give you the low down on all the mousey happenings in the seven days just gone by. This week, the Mice have mostly been...

Celebrating the fact that Scotland are staying by whipping up a batch of the Scot's finest (and whisper it - easiest) baked treat - shortbread. On the Referendum Eve, we dashed home, got busy in the kitchen and then snuggled on the sofa with a stack of shortbread and strawberries in front of Braveheart.

If you fancy channeling your inner Mary Berry and getting your bake on this weekend, here's our super simple shortbread recipe...

Scottish Shortbread
Makes a batch of ten

You'll need:
150g of flour (sifted)
100g of unsalted butter (room temperature)
50g of caster sugar

Grab a mixing bowl and cream the butter and sugar together with a wooden spoon. Gradually add the flour tablespoon by tablespoon until you have a smooth mixture. Knead your dough, squidge it into a ball and pop it in the fridge for ten minutes. Meanwhile get your oven nice and toasty (around 180C).

Once your dough's suitably chilled, roll it out to half a centimetre thick and cut it into whatever shapes your heart desires. Space your dough shapes out across a baking tray and whack them in the oven for 10-15 minutes until they're golden and crumbly. While your shortbread cools, scatter with a sprinkle of sugar.

Serve with a tumble of strawberries and a large glass of wine while considering that you're delighted that we're still united...

Fully intending to transform into a gypsy mermaid princess this Spring in the wake of Marchesa's tenth anniversary gorgeousness that floated down the catwalk to kick off London Fashion Week last Saturday. When the daffodils poke up their little yellow noses next April, we're planning to copy every last detail of the Marchesa girls' looks from the crowns of their boho-mussed tresses right down to to the very tips of their Louboutin-clad toes. We're aware that we may look a little OTT in Tesco and those fairytale skirts may well not be the most practical for hopping on and off the tube but we girls can dream. Here for your swooning pleasure are some of our fav pieces...

So, I think that's the cue for a little Friday poem...

Have a wonderful weekend!

Guest Post: Five things you need to know about London Fashion Week...

New York down.
London down.
Milan just down.
Only Paris left to go - and what a fashion month it's been so far...

But in the constant whirl of shows, front rows and jaw dropping collection after collection, are you beginning to find that everything's starting to blur around the edges a little? Time to take a step back and consider what you'll be filling your wardrobe with come September? Well luckily we have a little guest blog treat for you today - fashion writer, Caitlin Leslie of awesome new blog, The Aperitif, has distilled London Fashion Week down into the five key takeaways from the A/W 14 shows...

London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014 spanned five days, 105 shows (60 on-schedule, 45 off), countless Starbucks runs and 30 grey whippets. It was the Fashion Week that saw Kendall Jenner sit next to Anna Wintour on the front row, TomFord knock off Jay-Z, and monogrammed capes take centre stage at Burberry. But now that the circus has moved on to Paris via Milan, I’ve looked back on the Somerset House whirlwind and picked out the five things you really need to know about.

The Accessory

Images: Mulberry.com

Thanks to a hugely hyped launch event on Sunday, Mulberry’s collaboration with Cara Delevingne was one of Fashion Week’s biggest news stories. Everyone was expecting a bag named after the model, given the wild success of Mulberry’s Alexa and Del Rey styles, but instead we got a whole Cara collection.

Three bags, each of them a riff on Cara’s tomboy streak, can be worn as a backpack or carried by a shorter handle at the top. In camo, quilted or studded colour ways, they’re all stamped with a tiny ‘Made in England’ script, just like the tattoo on her foot. "In that first meeting I was quite strong about wanting it to be practical,” she told Vogue, “something for a modern-day woman - or man -and not just doing one job."

So the moonlit forest photo call at Claridge’s, where Delevingne was barefoot and surrounded by whippets, was an unexpectedly floaty, feminine choice. It mirrored Mulberry’s heritage more than the bags’ androgynous elements, and proved that even Cara isn’t calling every shot yet.

The Colour

Sugar pink might have been tipped as the colour for Spring/Summer2014, but at London Fashion Week the most stylish spectators had already traded candy floss for layers of blue. Fuzzy pastel coats were worn like capes on the cobbles of Somerset House, and royal blue appeared on voluminous trousers and skirts. There was denim too, doubled up and worn in the most mannish of ways, mixed in with leopard print or grey tailoring.

On the runway a rich ultramarine appeared at Peter Pilotto, Sister by Sibling and Richard Nicoll, who started his show with a succession of three all-blue looks. There were flashes of sky at Roksanda Ilincic while a dark teal infected Burberry’s autumnal palette. And Marios Schwab gave navy a newfound sexiness, embroidering sheer layers and bomber jackets with silver constellations.

The high street presentations were all over it too, with Whistles adopting the moody blues in its block prints and Hunter working a bright Yves Klein shade into its first Fashion Week show. At Topshop Unique, the mammoth Tate Modern runway opened with a mohair overcoat, wrapped over a matching cobalt sweater.

The Show

Christopher Kane was one of the most talked-about shows of the week, even before it started. On a bleak and rainy Monday morning, there were the inevitable comparisons to J.W. Anderson, who had shown an earthy, romantic and highly sculpted collection two days earlier. Both are young, home-grown designers (Anderson is Irish and Kane is from Scotland, earning them a SixNations analogy from Business of Fashion) with eponymous labels, who have accepted their first foreign investment (from LVMH and Kering respectively) in the last year.

But with his explosion of ideas on the runway, Kane managed to outshine all of the speculation. He has a reputation for working theme after theme into a single collection, and that refusal to focus on just one concept has become one of his greatest strengths. This time there was ruching almost everywhere: on PVC trims, pale yellow knitwear and scrunchy grey dresses. The botanical motifs from his Spring/Summer 2014 collection reappeared on an apron-style dress, while fluffy mink was employed as an unexpected foil to all that PVC.

And for all its contradictions, this felt like one of Kane’s most wearable collections. His double-breasted overcoats, which fell to the knee with a masculine cut, showed that he can offer up investment pieces as well as novel ideas. His final looks – dresses made of geometric mille-feuille that fluttered as the models walked – are bound to become some of next season’s most-wanted pieces.

The Shoes

Images: Theguardian.com

Sophia Webster’s heartbreak hotel-themed presentation was one of the most Instagrammed events at Fashion Week. Nicknamed "Happily Ever After Is So Once Upon A Time," it saw models recline in bubble baths (with their heels sticking out of the tub, obviously) and pose with pink feather dusters or vintage telephones. It was a Clueless-inspired take on the Barbie dream house, complete with platinum hair extensions clipped into the brunette models’ locks.

And the shoes were as colourful as their setting, with rose prints, fur trims and sweetie-studded platforms. Perspex was mixed up with old school sneaker laces, knee-high boots were made entirely of latticework and there were flashes of zebra print, made fun in a way that only Webster could manage. Footwear presentations can easily end up buried under all the excitement of the runway, but this was like a huge exclamation mark in-between the shows. It reminded everyone – as if they had forgotten – why Webster’s so quickly become London’s coolest shoe designer, as well as the most colourful.

The New Names

Images: Style.com

Fashion East, which showcases three breakthrough designers in a combined show every season, welcomed two new names to the fold for Autumn/Winter 2014. Helen Lawrence and Louise Alsop showed their collections alongside Ashley Williams (who was taking part for the final time), and both brought something new to the runway.

Louise Alsop worked almost entirely in monochrome, only making an exception for a few barely-there pastels. She scribbled ‘hopeless’ and ‘loveless’ on sweatshirts and dresses with staggered hems, planting the seeds of rebellion in unfinished necklines and wisps of chiffon. A high-necked dress in pure white, wrapped with cords at the waist, was a fresh take on eveningwear.
Helen Lawrence’s collection was all about texture, with fuzzy pencil skirts and three-quarter length trousers in grey, lilac and mint mohair. Squiggly, almost cartoon-like tops were held together with zigzag embroidery for a flash of contradiction: hard lines etched onto a purposefully unfinished silhouette.

With tutoring from Lulu Kennedy – director of Fashion East and “fairygodmother” to London’s emerging talent - ahead of them, these are two names worth memorising. The show’s alumni already includes Gareth Pugh, Jonathan Saunders and Meadham Kirchhoff, some of the most interesting designers to show at London Fashion Week, so the potential here is huge.

The Greatest Cape: A/W 13 Trend Alert

If there's one trend that single-handedly dominated the runways during fashion month it was the cape.

Image via: www.pinterest.com

It started at the Couture shows in Paris - capes, capes, everywhere! From wispy, etheral evening capes at Elie Saab to structured, sculptural capes at Giambattista Valli with a light dusting of dramatic, fairytale capes at  Ulyana Sergeenko.

Cape mania continued apace at the New York Ready to Wear shows, where designers including Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam and Donna Karan dispatched a band of caped-up models down their catwalks.

King of the cape in London was Marios Schwabb whose ankle grazing beauties had us wishing for autumn.

Over in Milan superhero style popped up yet again with luxe velvet and fur capes at Pucci and checks at Blumarine.

Last but not least, Paris also ran with the trend adding a dash of the swish-factor to the Chloe and Valentino catwalks.

There's no doubt, that come September the high street will be cape central. Middle Mouse, always one to sense a trend before it drops, snapped up a gorgeous Just Cavalli Cape in the January sales which she's been rocking ever since with a delicious pair of elbow length wool and leather McQ Alexander McQueen gloves (another tick for the Middle Mouse fashdar - long gloves adorned arms all over the a/w catwalks).

If you don't possess Middle Mouse levels of fashion foresight but want to get in on the cape trend now, we have a solution which should tide you over until Autumn that doesn't even involve any new purchases... shoulder robing! Take one coat or jacket, sling casually over your shoulders (no arms in armholes) et voila, a capey-silhouette! Even if this wasn't the perfect way to lift a trend straight from the runway, could there be a better solution to trans-seasonal wardrobe quandaries?!

For further illustration of how it's done, see sports-luxe shoulder robing at Lanvin and polished winter-white robing at Hermes.

This Week the Mice Have Mostly Been...

We have two jetsetting Mice this week and one lonely London-bound mouse...Biggie is obvo in HK and Middle is living it up in NY (well working but still!). I've had a picture or two and updates as to the Middle Mouse's goings on which are making me hugely sad to be in London! I have never been to New York, but love the sound of it so much that I'm practically packing my bags as I type! I think a Soho loft apartment, jogs in Central Park and weekend shopping at Henri Bendal would suit me down to a tee...but I'll stick with Shoreditch, Victoria Park and Zara instead!!

So when we haven't been dreaming of a life far away, this week the Mice have mostly been...

Celebrating The Refinery bar's 4th birthday! This week we were emailed an invite, so we thought why not trot on down and help the party along! The bar is located about 5 minutes walks from Southwark tube - it didn't appear to be the liveliest of locations, kind of in the middle of nowhere but the bar was pretty packed and we had lots of fun regardless! The Refinery is the sister to our favourite City based bar The Folly, it has been designed in very much the same theme. Lots of mismatched furniture, sanded wood, impressive high ceilings, exposed light bulbs and lots of candles! Cosy, chic and relaxed, the only difference being that The Refinery is on a much smaller scale.

The celebrations included yum cocktails - I went for a gin and rhubarb bitters concoction complete with an edible flower and my friend Charlotte went for the Mojito topped up with champagne...delish! We were spoilt by tray after tray of delicious canapes - mini mustard hotdogs, ribs and chili lentils and creme fraiche! The treats were so delicious that we constantly had one eye on the kitchen and could barely hold a conversation! As soon as the cocktails kicked in, we swapped to wine which came in glasses so big that they could have been mistaken for buckets! Not a sensible Tuesday evening activity but a quirky, fun bar with delicious food...worth a visit especially if you like suits!

Sifting through LFW pictures and gossip...HK mouse has done the official round-up but I can't help but comment on my disappointment in the Topshop Unique show. I loved the AW12/13 show back in March and even wrote a post dedicated to the collection raving about the Luxe Utility look, amazing colour palette and especially the velvet jumpsuit - it was effortlessly cool and bang on. However I was left feeling uninspired and dare I say it, slightly bored looking through the SS13 pictures. There were some pieces that I liked and a few prints that were very wearable but I didn't see anything jumping out as particularly new. Unlike the AW show there wasn't a look I felt really, really excited for and wanted to get my hands on ASAP! Come on Topshop, work your magic and be the one and only high street fashion power house once again!!

Blushing at the most recent royal exposé ...this time it isn't Harry splashed across the front pages baring all, but in fact our Princess Kate! Topless pictures of her were snapped whilst she and William holidayed in France and were quickly snatched up by a few publications who weren't shy in letting us all take a peek at Kate exposed. There's been lots of debate on the photos, where do you stand on it all!?

Some say that she only has herself to blame. After Harry's recent tough lesson, you would think that topless sunbathing visible from the road would be a definite no no. Especially given that Kate's photographed everywhere that she goes and knows full well that there's an insatiable appetite for pictures of her which the press then dissect for fashion, body language, hair, makeup...anything that they can possibly write about! However, others have said that she was on a private, family estate where she thought that she was far away from prying lenses. It wasn't as though she was sunbathing topless on a public beach while on an official Royal trip. Kate was on holiday with her husband and we think that really she should be able to relax without constant pressure and scrutiny from the press. It is sad that something so private can be witnessed by a complete stranger and plastered everywhere for nation to see, ridicule and use to make money at Kate's expense.

Like Butter wouldn't melt - poor Kate!
Image via www.dailymail.co.uk

Right or wrong, I'm not surprised that the brutal press took full opportunity despite poor Kate's privacy or reputation - the words 'gold dust' spring to mind! However I am happy to hear they the Royals have won their court case and a ban on any further publication of the pictures. Now get back to shaking that royal booty in Tuvalu with the locals...!

Slathering on the new Paul Frank Lip Smackers! Who remembers the Lip Smackers craze back in the day...? Everyone had one in the playground, a sort of competition as to who had the best flavour...I remember my favourite was the watermelon! Well the lip balm brand has now teamed up with American cartoonist and streetwear designer, Paul Frank, and released a new range with 6 'Lip Smackin' flavours - Raspberry, Carrot Cake, Sweet Cream, Strawberry Banana and the one I'm trying out - Fried Ice Cream! Sounds strange but smells divine and they're surprisingly moisturising and shiny! Best of all it takes me back to being in the playground doing hopscotch in my red check school dress, patent shoes and pigtails!

Well that's it for another week, I will be happy to have my Middle Mouse friend back for lots of gossip, cocktails and nights out this weekend! 10 Greek Street and Archer's Street is on the agenda and lots of TV to catch up on...Mrs Biggs, Leaving and Revenge...who could ask for more!

Enjoy my friends...!

3BM Best Bits: LFW SS 2013

We've reached the halfway mark! London's done and dusted, and now the fashionistas have hotfooted it to Milan for the next leg of the fashion merry-go-round, Milan Fashion Week. We're already swooning over Aerial the mermaid hued beaded slips of gorgeousness shown yesterday at Alberta Ferretti and we're seriously loving the kaleidoscope of hothouse colour-blocked Gucci pieces which nicely offset the monochrome evening gowns that Frida Giannini sent down the runway. But, can the rest of Milan match up to last week's London out-and-out amazingness? We'll have to see...

In the meantime, here's our round-up of our favourite moments from LFW staged in the indisputable fashion capital of the world... (what can we say? We're patriotic!)

More Than Just Pretty Dresses at Vivienne Westwood
Who says fashion's frivolous? In usual punkish Westwood style, the 71 year old designer closed her LFW show by parading down the catwalk in a t-shirt proclaiming 'Climate Revolution' below a banner bearing the same slogan. Championing the sustainable fashion cause, Westwood urged dedicated followers of fashion to "buy less, choose well, make it last".

And the politics didn't stop there. In a show of support for the WikiLeaks' founder's battle against his extradition, Westwood handed out T-shirts to models and celebrities bearing her face and the words "I'm Julian Assange". a A particularly provocative move given that the show was being staged at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Headquarters in London...

Issa: Exoticism and Acid Brights
Politics aside, fashion week wouldn't be fashion week without some very pretty dresses... And very pretty dresses is what Issa excels at. We brought you news earlier this week of the brand new Issa online store and we now can't wait until these beauties land next spring. We sense that internet shopping time may need to be rationed to avoid fatal damage to our credit cards...

Liberty Ross Hits Back
Liberty Ross walking at Wang was one of our NYFW highlights and, this week, at a London Fashion Week party, the new head-held-high Liberty stepped out looking fabulous in fur with a new man on her arm. Rupert who?

What's Black & White and Worn All Over?
We sensed that monochrome was going to be hot for Spring when we spied Marc Jacobs' Bridget Riley-esque collection and a runway awash with black and white at BCBG Max Azria. But if there was any doubt at all in our Micey minds, it was definitely pushed aside by the monochrome mania sweeping London last week, in particular at Sass & Bide, Giles and Topshop Unique. Gucci continued the trend over in Milan yesterday. We say go and dig out your best black and white immediately, nothing's chicer than this classic colour combo.

Treacy went Gaga
Is it a bird? Is it a blancmange? Don't be ridiculous, it's Gaga...

Following surprise catwalk guests in New York last week, milliner, Philip Treacy, outshone them all by sending a hot pink net shrouded superstar out to open his first runway show in thirteen years. Lady Gaga kicked off the show before darting to sit front row to watch the parade of eye-popping headpieces modeled by an all black cast of girls wearing original Michael Jackson stage costumes. You couldn't make it up...

Stellar FROW at Mulberry (as well as gnomes and real life poodles...)
Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Ennis, Lana Del Rey, Kate Moss and a whole host of our current favourite actresses. A page from Victoria Beckham's address book? No, just Mulberry's front row...

Images via: www.huffingtonpost.com

The vibe was English country garden, complete with giant plastic garden gnomes, laser cut flowers, lizard motifs and real life poodles... The show kicked off fashionably late, thirty minutes after it was due to start, reputedly down to the fact that Miss Moss wasn't running to schedule. Still, we're sure that Emma Hill will forgive her, the Super later gushed to the press about the latest Mulberry arm-candy offering, the Willow - a tote which comes complete with a removable clutch. We're with you Kate, we want. A LOT!

Image via: www.graziadaily.co.uk

Mary K Wishes You Were Here
The queen of print, Mary Katrantzou, reigned supreme this week with a collection inspired by stamps and bank notes from around the world. We weren't quite as enamoured with the SS collection as we were with the teaspoon and typewriter prints from the AW collection, but we're head over heels for those serrated stamp-edge trimmed Louboutin booties!

Images via: www.style.com

Anya Hindmarch Merry-Go-Round
In February, handbag genius, Anya Hindmarch turned nutty professor meets Willy Wonka to showcase her AW collection, so we were super excited to see what the SS showcase would bring... And Super excitement was most certainly warranted! The final day of LFW saw Poppy Delevigne and Olivia Palermo perched front row before a carousel swirling to provide a glimpse of a various cheeky Victorian tableaus centered around some particularly delicious handbags. Words can't do it justice, check out the video below...

Bum's the New Black at Pam Hogg
Better step up the squats immediately, it's official, next spring if you want to be on trend your bottom's going to need to be in tip top shape. In a move that makes McQueen's bumsters look chaste, Pam Hogg sent Alice Dellal down the runway with her peachy posterior fully on display. Hmmm, we think this may be one look that the Mice won't be channeling...

Image via: www.huffingtonpost.com

Right, we're off to resume Style.com watch to see what those impossibly stylish Italians come up with next...
